7 SIGNS YOU ARE GUIDED BY YOUR HIGHER SELF, NOT YOUR EGO

In today’s spiritual conversations, the term “higher self” comes up often. Many of us have heard phrases like, “Connect with your higher self to become more abundant, grounded, or at peace.”

But what does that actually mean – and how do you recognize your higher self when it shows up? And most importantly, how can you tell if the voice in your head is helping or hurting you?

In this article, we explore these concepts through both psychological and spiritual lenses, and learn how to distinguish the higher self from the mental chatter that clouds our judgment.
Let’s get to it!

What is Higher Self in Spirituality?

In spiritual traditions, the “higher self” represents THE MOST AUTHENTIC version of who we are.

The higher self is often described as a divine or enlightened aspect of us that connects to a greater UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS –  a vast, intelligent energy that flows through all things.

It is the source of wisdom, guidance, and intuition when we are aligned with it. It is like an unmistakable COMPASS that guides our decisions and leads the way.

When we follow this compass, we align with our soul and fulfill our true life purpose.

What is Higher Self in Psychology?

In psychology, the counterpart of the spiritual concept of the higher self is self-actualization.

Carl Rogers, a humanistic psychologist, emphasized the importance of becoming one’s true self through personal growth and authenticity. For him, self-actualization was about realizing one’s full potential and aligning with our true nature.

Abraham Maslow, similarly, placed self-actualization at the top of his hierarchy of needs.

To Maslow, self-actualization is the process of becoming the best version of ourselves, fulfilling our talents, and living authentically.

Both of these psychological perspectives align with the idea of the higher self as the PINNACLE of human development, where one achieves inner peace, fulfillment, and a deep sense of purpose.

what is higher consciousness?

The concept of higher self also ties into higher consciousness – an awareness that transcends the individual and taps into a greater collective mind.

Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychiatrist, believed in the idea of the collective unconscious: a shared reservoir of memories and experiences passed down through generations.

Jung argued that we are all connected through this collective consciousness and that tapping into it can lead to profound self-understanding and healing.

Higher consciousness, in this sense, is not just about individual awakening, but also a sense of connection to the greater whole of humanity and the universe.

It’s an awareness of being part of something larger than oneself – a connection to ALL LIFE and the underlying energy of the universe.

Higher Self vs. Ego

Understanding the difference between the higher self and the ego is crucial.

The ego is the part of us that is concerned with survival, identity, and EXTERNAL VALIDATION. It often operates out of fear, judgment, and attachment to outcomes.

Ego is often shaped by external factors like society, upbringing, and past experiences.

In contrast, the higher self is the most natural, genuine state of us. It operates from a place of love, acceptance, and truth. It encourages self-awareness, inner peace, and connection with others.

To distinguish between the two, ask yourself:

  • Am I acting from fear or from love?
→ Ego reacts out of fear, insecurity, or the need for control. Higher self responds with love, trust, and openness.

  • Do I need validation or am I at peace without it?
→ Ego seeks approval, praise, or attention. Higher self is content in alignment, even if no one notices.

  • Does this decision feel heavy or light?
→ Ego often creates pressure and tension. Higher self feels grounded, clear, and often brings a sense of relief.

  • Am I chasing something or flowing with it?
→ Ego forces, clings, and chases. Higher self allows, trusts, and flows.

  • Would I still choose this if no one knew?
→ Ego acts for appearances. Higher self chooses based on inner alignment.
  • Am I reacting emotionally or responding consciously?
→ Ego is impulsive, defensive, or overly attached. Higher self is reflective, calm, and centered.

7 Signs That Your Higher Self is Talking to you

If you’re like me, then you know the feeling of being torn. One minute you’re confident, the next you’re doubting everything.

Mixed messages we get from our brain can make us doubt ourselves and feel inadequate.

But..

Those contradictory thoughts are something we all experience. This is completely normal.

The key is to decipher those two voices. You need to learn to recognize: is this your “monkey mind” speaking – full of fear, distraction, and impulse – or is it your higher self gently trying to reach out?

Here are 7 simple signs that will help you to do that.

1. Synchronicities and Coincidences

You know those moments when you’re grappling with a tough decision and suddenly overhear a stranger say exactly what you needed to hear? Or when the same number keeps popping up on clocks, receipts, and license plates.

These synchronicities aren’t just coincidences – they’re often subtle nudges from your higher self.

Jung believed that synchronicities are messages from the unconscious (or even the collective unconscious), offering insight, guidance, or confirmation. To Jung, these events weren’t magical thinking – they were part of how the psyche communicates through symbols and archetypes.

He noticed that this usually arises when a person is undergoing personal transformation. For example, they might start seeing butterflies everywhere, which can symbolize a confirmation that change is not only okay – it is necessary.

Jung believed that synchronicities are one way the psyche—and perhaps the universe—reminds us we’re connected to something greater than ourselves. They don’t force decisions or provide exact answers, but they do whisper: “You’re on the right track. Keep paying attention.”

2. Disconnect with inauthentic

Another subtle, yet powerful, sign from your higher self is a sudden discomfort around people or situations you once tolerated. You might be talking to someone you’ve known for years when, out of nowhere, you feel like something’s off – like their words no longer match their energy, or their presence feels… hollow.

It’s as if your intuition is quietly saying, This isn’t real anymore.

This disconnect can show up in different ways:

  • You feel emotionally drained after being around someone who used to energize you.

  • You start picking up on phony behavior – forced laughter, surface-level conversations, or subtle manipulation you didn’t notice before.

  • You no longer resonate with old groups or friendships, even if you can’t point to a specific reason why.

  • You feel the urge to be quiet or distant, not out of malice, but as a form of self-preservation.

As you connect more deeply with your higher self, anything that’s OUT OF SYNC with your authenticity naturally becomes harder to tolerate.

In a way, your INNER COMPASS sharpens. You can better sense what’s real and what’s just performing.

It can feel uncomfortable, especially when it involves long-standing relationships, but it’s also a form of spiritual protection.

Your higher self is guiding you and you MUST follow.

3. time feels differently

Have you ever had a day where time felt like it bent around you, either stretching endlessly or flying by in a blink?

When you’re in tune with your higher self, your relationship with time often begins to shift.

You might notice:

  • Losing track of time while doing something meaningful, like writing, meditating, or having a deep conversation. Hours pass, but it feels like minutes.

  • Time is dragging during situations that feel out of alignment, like draining conversations or jobs that no longer fulfill you.

  • Moments of “time distortion”, where everything slows down during a powerful realization or decision.

  • Increased déjà vu or the feeling that events are unfolding exactly as they should, even if you can’t logically explain why.

This isn’t just about scheduling or being busy. It’s about your inner clock syncing more with PRESENSE than pressure.

When you’re connected to your higher self, you move through life more intuitively, and time begins to feel less like a rigid structure and more like a FLOW.

You feel less rushed. More attuned. As if you’re walking in rhythm with something larger than yourself.

So if you catch yourself asking, “Where did the time go?” or, alternatively, “Why does this hour feel like eternity?” – pay attention.

Your higher self might be nudging you to lean in, shift course, or simply slow down and notice what truly matters.

4. glitches that save you

Have you ever recorded a voice message in the heat of the moment – maybe something a little too honest, raw, or controversial – and when you tried to send it, it just wouldn’t go through? Bad signal, app freeze, error message. A glitch. But instead of listening to that pause, you pushed through, sent it anyway… and immediately regretted it?

That first failed attempt was your higher self intervening.

These little “glitches” often show up when you’re about to do something that’s out of alignment – when emotion is driving the wheel instead of clarity. They don’t always look spiritual.

At first, they feel annoying, like life is messing with your plans. But in hindsight, they were protective detours. Gentle reminders to pause. To not react. To reconsider.

Your higher self doesn’t shout; it WHISPERS through resistance, delays, and quiet glitches that say, Are you sure?

The next time technology “fails” or something doesn’t go as expected, ask yourself: Was that a mistake… or a moment of grace?

5. body betrays your mind

Did you know that as children, we were perfectly in tune with our senses and intuition?

There’s a saying: children and dogs know everything. You can smile, say the right things, and play nice with adults – but you can’t fool a child.

They feel everything. They read your energy, not your words. They instinctively pick up on tension, authenticity, and intention because their inner compass hasn’t been conditioned to doubt itself yet.

But as we grow up, we start to lose that connection. We’re taught to prioritize logic over feeling, politeness over truth, and appearances over intuition.

We override our gut reactions in order to “make things work.” And that’s when the split begins – between what we think and what we feel.

When you tap into your Higher Self, you might notice:

  • Agreeing to something that “makes sense,” but feeling physically uncomfortable right after.

  • Getting headaches, tight shoulders, or stomachaches when you’re around people who drain you, even if you can’t explain why.

  • Feeling suddenly exhausted in environments where you’re not meant to be.

  • Freezing up or feeling anxious before taking an action that isn’t aligned with your truth.

The body holds deep wisdom. It remembers your truth, even when you try to ignore it. So the next time your body reacts strongly – whether with resistance or relief – pause. Ask yourself: What is this sensation trying to tell me?

Because before your mind catches up, your body already knows.

6. vivid dreams

When you’re tuning in to your higher self, the veil between your conscious and unconscious mind starts to thin – and that’s when your dreams begin to speak louder.

Have you ever woken up from a dream that felt too real to be random? Maybe it was emotional, symbolic, or oddly specific.

These vivid dreams often come in waves, especially during times of personal growth, emotional release, or spiritual awakening.

They’re not just background noise while you sleep; they’re messages.

You might notice:

  • Recurring symbols or themes – like water, flying, being chased, or meeting the same person over and over.

  • Dreams that leave a strong emotional imprint even after you wake up – confusion, relief, clarity, or even tears.

  • Visitation dreams, where loved ones who’ve passed appear with a sense of peace or guidance.

  • Prophetic dreams, where something you saw in sleep unfolds later in waking life.

Your higher self uses dreams as a way to process what your waking mind may be avoiding – or not yet ready to understand.

Think of it as a spiritual inbox: symbolic messages arriving when you’re quiet enough to receive them.

If you’re having vivid dreams, pay attention. Write them down. Don’t worry about “figuring them out” right away. Just begin a dialogue with them. Often, the meaning unfolds in layers over time.

7. random phrases that echo your thoughts

Have you ever been deep in thought – maybe wrestling with a decision, questioning something, or silently asking for clarity – when suddenly, you hear someone say exactly what you were thinking?

Maybe it’s a stranger’s passing comment, a lyric on the radio, or a line in a book you randomly open. And it stops you in your tracks. How did the outside world just echo what’s in my mind?

These moments aren’t just coincidences. They’re reflections. Tiny winks from your higher self that say: I hear you. You’re not alone. Keep going.

These phrases often show up when you’re in need of reassurance, clarity, or a nudge to trust your intuition. They feel personal, not because the world is reading your mind, but because your higher self is using the world to communicate with you.

So when you hear a random sentence and your heart skips a beat or your eyes water for no reason, take a breath. You were meant to hear that. And your higher self is closer than you think.

Back to you

Remember, your higher self is always present, offering guidance through intuition, inner peace, and a sense of alignment. By tuning into this inner wisdom, you can make decisions that resonate with your true self, leading to a more authentic and meaningful life.

You just have to be open and receptive to the subtle language your higher self communicates with you. Watch for the signs and bravely follow where they will take you!
